few weeks ago they asked for me to compose an essay on a painting by Hopper, one of the Nighthawks and I, being a good researcher, went to find out. Since it is generally known, or at least is learn by experience, that in order to appreciate a painting one needs to know its history as well as the artist and above all the context in the which it was painted. Art is definitely something universal, transcendent to the space and time, which makes it readable over the course of many centuries. The meanings alter, as does the way the world and society change and what used to be clearly seen, perhaps several years ago, is now so obvious. What was unthinkable before is now revealing our work in a different manner.Re-defining a piece of work in the course of timeIt's a little like what I imagine happens when you view the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar, late at late at night, with that window, which resembles an aquarium, from the position of characters who were observed.I believe that in this painting, Hopper was trying to open up space to the viewer, allowing him to observe the silent serene, well-detailed and peaceful scene presented to us by the darkness. This space, conceived to be a place for active viewing, is perhaps the keystone that allows the artwork to be changed over time and consequently to remain timeless, indestructible contemporary, and contemporary. The painting, made in 1942, cannot be immediately attributable to an exact historical moment However, it is believed that its dating is changeable depending on the changing viewers, based on the exact time at which the piece is seen.In my opinion this is the most important aspect of reading, the time and space occupied by the observer that Hopper was hoping to create.I'll explain.Researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able see how people describe the film by highlighting these aspects:"[...] the solitude, the feeling of emptyness of an environment whose glistening patina is beginning to fade. [...] The distinctly commercial essence lies, the myths rip off their masks and reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no valid points of reference Isolated by doubt and lack of conscience. "The night and the transformationI believe this interpretation is not complete and, therefore, it's a interpretation provided from the socio-cultural context as well as by the date attributed to the work: the United States between the 40s and 50s during the boom in economics that redefined cultural and social assets that were a part of the lives of the people in a society that was even a bit bourgeois where night bars are seen as places of loneliness, despair and existential emptiness. It's true in a certain degree, and it's not the whole truth.First time that I came across the painting without having studied it, it gave me a lot of happiness and peace with its vibrant contrast and nocturnal stillness. If I'm from the midst of a huge, noisy and bustling city, night is one of the moments that I am able to enjoy the city in a more peaceful way: fewer people around and fewer vehicles and less noise, more open spaces to appropriate, which place to rest under the starless urban sky. Night has a completely different meaning to me than those who went to bars in the United States during the 40s as the sun's path down, the city transforms its appearance and streets become more open and easy.We must not forget how society has evolved in more than half a century of cultural and social changes. This is the case in between Pop as well as Rock culture, between popular psychedelic scene in the 1990s and 2000s.Personally, as a daughter of the 90s, I was also a night-time kid and by "growing up" I'm referring to every one of the "formative" experiences that the night brought me. For me , it's common to be out at night, often walking through the streets, and on Saturdays looking for the most memorable party, dancing until the early hours while riding a motorbike, or driving around in search of the last bar open you can grab a croissant or hot pizza, where to drink the last glass of wine and light the last cigarette before dawn was set. Maybe from the 80s to the present, nightlife stopped in a way that scared those who stayed home (let's keep in mind the anti-prohibitionism movement and jazz movement and even the notorious Cursed Poets who were all great nights owls) and it became the place where many of the prominent personalities of society find the tranquility and security of the other nightclubs.https://notes.io/Gh2Ureminds me of many scenes of real contemporary life, and makes me almost happy and, in all likelihood, sympathize with the last three characters who engage in an exchange of words while the bartender is cleaning the bar to end the day and then open another. Those nocturnes seek rest in the silence of the nocturnal company, meditate on their lives observing them through a glass . They form a group of the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It's no accident that in the oldest civilisations, such as the Indian one, the half hour before sunrise is known as Brahmamuhurta, or time of Brahma the most ideal moment to commit oneself to prayer, meditation, study and introspection. This is the time of day when the energy is more intense, intense but of tranquil, spiritual intensity. There is no solitude nor absence in the painting of Hopper. I found more among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters, since even the right-thinking people started going out at night. So that, even the most popular and historic neighborhoods had to be transformed into showcases for the consumer as the spontaneous gatherings of people who gathered in the square were required to arrange themselves in line, waiting for their turn; and the music of the drums on the other side of the street was silenced by police sirens. This is what worries me today that nighttime is shattered by its mystical, timeless ambience and by the fact that it is an occasion of aggregation for the lone wolves, and is now another uncover productive gear of the system, demanding the highest level of professionalism and clarity even in the darkest parts of the city.
