a few weeks ago, they asked for me to compose an essay on one of the paintings by Hopper, the Nighthawks and I, being an experienced researcher, was able to inform me. It is well-known, or at least is learned from experience, that to understand a painting, it is necessary to know the history of the painting, the author and most importantly the context in which he painted it. Art is definitely an universal thing, that transcends time and space, which makes it readable in the midst of centuries. However, the interpretations alter, as does the way the world and society change, and what previously could be seen clearly, possibly years after, is not so obvious. What was not considered before now could be revealing our work in a totally different manner.Re-meaning a work through timeThis is similar to what I imagine happens when you see Hopper's " Nighthawks" which was closed by the bar at night, in that window that resembles a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are observed.I believe that in this work, Hopper would have wanted to provide space to the viewer, allowing him to look at the silent, detailed and calm scene given to us by the darkness. The space, designed for an active viewer could be the keystone, which allows the painting to change throughout time and, consequently, to remain timeless, indestructible and even modern.https://writeablog.net/skinicon0/malding-like-crazy-lessons-from-the-mega-stars, created in 1942, is not immediately linked to a specific historical moment however it appears that the date of its creation can change according to the changes in the viewer, depending on the moment at which the work is observed.I believe this is the most important aspect of reading, the space that is occupied to the reader Hopper wanted to create.I'll explain.Researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks", I was able to observe how many describe it by highlighting these elements:"[...] the feeling of emptyness of an environment whose glistening patina is beginning to fade. [...] The distinctly commercial character lies, the myths rip off their masks and show a displaced reality, without valid points of reference in the face of uncertainty and unconscience. "The night and the transformationI believe this interpretation is a little ambiguous which means that it's an interpretation influenced by the social context and by the dating associated with the work: the United States between the 40s and 50s, in the economic boom that redefined cultural and social assets that were a part of the lives of individuals, a society that is even a little bourgeois, in which nightclubs are seen as places of solitude or despair. This is somewhat true and somewhat not.The first time I saw the painting without having studied, it gave me a lot of joy and peace, with its vibrant contrast and quiet nocturnal quality.Maybe, coming from an extremely noisy and crowded city, nighttime is one of those times where I can enjoy the city more calmly there are fewer people more cars, less noise, more spaces between the streets to make the most of, and which place to rest under the starless urban sky. The night has a very different meaning for me than those who went to bars in The United States during the 40s as the sun's path down and the city is transformed into its face, streets become more open and simple. It is impossible to ignore the way society has changed over the course of more than half a century of social and cultural shifts, that occurred between Pop as well as Rock culture, between the popular psychedelic scene as well as the decade 2000.As a girl of the 90s, I grew up also at night, and by growing up I mean all the "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. For me it is always normal to go out at night, often walking through the neighborhood on weekends, searching for the most memorable party, dancing until dawn while riding a motorbike, or car to find the last bar that is open to grab the hot pizza or croissant, where to drink the last glass of wine and light the last cigarette before sunrise came. Maybe from the 80s onwards, the night stopped frightening those who stayed at their homes (let's not forget the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and the cursed Poets, all perfect night owls) and it became the place where many of the prominent personalities of the world find comfort and peace of other nightclubs.Hopper's modern realist styleNowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of numerous scenes from day life. It make me feel satisfied and compassionate, especially with the three main characters, who have a chat while the bartender clears the bar in order to conclude a day and open another. People who are nocturnal seek peace in the silence of the nocturnal company, reflect on their lives by watching their surroundings through a glass, and meet as a tribe in the night, accepting everyone and judging no one. It's not a coincidence that in the oldest primitive civilizations like the Indian one, the half hour before dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma, the best time to dedicate oneself to meditation, prayer, study and introspection. In this space of time the energy is more intense as well as intense but with a calm, spiritual intensity. There is no solitude nor emptiness in Hopper's painting; I also found it among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters, since even the right-thinking people started going out at night. That's why even the oldest and most popular areas were transformed into showcases for the consumer as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people who gathered in the square had to rearrange themselves in line, waiting for their turn while the sound of the drums that played on the the street was silenced by police sirens. That scares me today that nighttime is desnatured by its mystical, timeless ambience and by the fact that it is a moment of aggregation for individuals, and by becoming an additional uncovering tool of the system, demanding the highest level of professionalism and clarity even from the darkest corners of the city.
