A few weeks ago, they requested I write an article on a painting by Hopper, the Nighthawks, and I, as an experienced researcher, was able to learn more. Since it is generally known, or at least is learned from experience, that in order to appreciate a painting one must know its history, the author and most importantly the context in the context in which Hopper painted it. Art is definitely something universal, transversal to the space and time, which makes it readable after hundreds of years. However, the interpretations alter, as does the way society and the world evolve and what was once able to be clearly seen, perhaps several years later, is no longer as obvious. What was never considered prior to, today could reveal the work to us in a different manner.Re-meaning a work through timeIt's a little like what I think happens when you see the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar, late at evening, and in the window wich looks like a fish tank, in the location of the characters that are observed.I think that in this painting, Hopper would have wanted to provide space for the viewer to allow him to observe the silent, detailed and calm scene presented to us by the night. This space, conceived for an active viewer, is perhaps the keystone that allows the work to change throughout time and, consequently, to be timeless, immortal, modern, even very contemporary. The painting, made in 1942, isn't immediately attributable to a precise historical moment, but it seems that its dating is changeable depending on the changing viewers, based on the time in the period in which the work is viewed. My opinion is that this is the key to reading, the time and space occupied to the reader Hopper was hoping to create.I'll explain. In my research for information and news about Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able to observe how many describe the film by highlighting these aspects:"[...] the solitude, the feeling of emptyness of the world that's shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The distinctly commercial character, the false myths take off their masks and show the world as a blurred reality, with no any valid reference points Isolated by doubt and lack of conscience. "The night and the transformationI believe this interpretation is partial, that is, it's a interpretation provided in the context of society and by the date associated with the work that took place in it was the United States between the 40s and 50s during the economic boom that redefined social and cultural assets in the lives of the people who lived in a society which is even a little bourgeois, where night bars are seen as places of loneliness or despair. This is somewhat true and somewhat not. When I first came across this painting, and without having studied it, it brought me a lot of happiness and peace with its vibrant contrast and nighttime stillness. If I'm from an extremely noisy and crowded metropolis, the night is one of the moments when I can experience the city in a more peaceful way: fewer people around, fewer cars as well as less noise. There are also more space between the streets to appropriate, the best place to be, beneath the starless urban sky. The night is a different meaning for me than those who frequented bars in America. United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down and the city is transformed into its appearance, and the streets become more free and simple. We must not forget how society has evolved in more than half a century of cultural and social changes. This is the case in between Pop as well as Rock culture, between psychedelic movement in the 1990s and 2000s.Personally, ashttps://diigo.com/0m7nl3in the 90s, I grew up also at night, and by growing up I am referring to every one of the "formative" experiences that the night brought me. It is for me normal to go out at night, often walking through the streets, and on Saturdays , looking for the most memorable nightclub, dancing till dawn, riding a motorbike or car to locate the last bar that is open to get the bread or hot pizza and where you can drink the last glass and light the last puff before dawn came. Maybe from the 80s onwards, the night stopped frightening those who stayed at the house (let's not forget the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and even the cursed Poets, all perfect night owls) and it became the cradle where many personalities are able to enjoy the tranquility and security of the other nighthawks.Hopper's contemporary realismThe painting of Hopper today reminds me of a variety of scenes from contemporary life, and makes me feel proud and in any case sympathize with the last three characters who engage in a chat while the bartender is cleaning the bar to end the bar and begin a new. Those nocturnes seek rest in the quiet of their nocturnal companions, meditate on their lives observing them through a glass and form a group of the night, accepting everyone and judging no one. It is no coincidence that in the oldest primitive civilizations like the Indian one that the time between midnight and dawn is called Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma, the best time to devote oneself to meditation, prayer as well as study and reflection. In this time, the energies are more acute as well as intense but with an ethereal, spiritual focus. There is no solitude nor emptiness in Hopper's painting; I found more among the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters. This is because even the right-thinking people started going out in the evening. In other words, the most popular and historic neighborhoods had to be transformed into showcases for the consumer; and the spontaneous aggregations of people in the square had to arrange themselves in line waiting to be seated while the sound of the drums that played on the other side of the street was slowed by police sirens. This is what worries me today because the night is desnatured by its sacred timeless atmosphere as an occasion of aggregation for lone wolves, and becoming another uncover productive gear of the system, requiring the highest level of professionalism and clarity even in the darkest parts of the city.
