few weeks ago they asked I write an article on the work of Hopper and the Nighthawks, and I, as an excellent researcher, went to find out. Since it is generally known, or at least is taught by experience, to understand a painting, one needs to know its history, the author and, most importantly, the context in the context in which Hopper painted it. It is surely something universal, transversal to both space and time and therefore accessible even after centuries. The interpretations, however, change, along with how society and the world evolve and what was once able to be seen clearly, possibly several years later, is no longer so obvious. What was not considered before,https://blogfreely.net/authormakeup16/the-hidden-mystery-behind-hoppers-nighthawkscould reveal our work in a totally different manner.Re-defining a work over timeThis is a bit like what I imagine happens when you view the work of Hopper's " Nighthawks" that was shut at the bar, late at night, in that window wich looks like an aquarium, from the position of characters who were observed.I believe that in this painting, Hopper wanted to give space to the viewer, inviting viewers to take in the quiet, detailed and calm scene presented to us by the dark night. This particular space, created for an active viewer, is perhaps the keystone that allows the artwork to be reinterpreted in the course of time, and to be timeless, immortal, modern, even very modern. The painting, made in 1942, is not immediately attributable to an exact historical moment, but it seems that its dating is changeable depending on the changing viewer, according to the moment at which the piece is seen.In my opinion this is what is essential to reading, the time and space occupied to the reader Hopper desired to create.I'll explain. In my research for information and news about Hopper's " Nighthawks", I was able to be aware of how many people have described it by highlighting these elements:"[...] the solitude, the feeling of emptiness of an environment whose glistening patina begins to give way [...] The distinctly commercial essence lies, the myths rip off their masks to reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no any valid reference points in the face of uncertainty and unconscience. "Night and transformationI believe this interpretation is partial and, therefore, it's a interpretation provided from the socio-cultural context and by the dates associated with the work that took place in the United States between the 40s and 50s, in the economic boom which redefined the social and cultural values in the lives of the people in a society that was even a bit bourgeois, in which nightclubs are seen as places of solitude, despair and existential emptiness. This is somewhat true and somewhat not.First time that I saw the painting without having studied it, it brought me a lot of joy and peace, with its bright contrast and its nocturnal stillness.Maybe, coming from a large busy and noisy city, night is one of those times where I can enjoy the city with more peace: fewer people around more cars and less noise, more open spaces to make the most of, and which place to rest under the night sky that is starless.https://colonmirror88.bloggersdelight.dk/2021/10/21/the-secret-of-hoppers-nighthawks/has a very different meaning to me than those who frequented bars in America. United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down and the city is transformed into its face, the streets become more free and simple. We must not forget how society has evolved in more than half a century of cultural and social shifts, between Pop and Rock culture, and between the popular psychedelic scene and the 2000s.Personally, as a child of the 90s, I was also a night-time kid, and by growing up I mean everything "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. For me it is always normal to go out at night, often walking around the neighborhood, and on Saturdays looking for the best party, dancing until dawn and riding around on a motorbike or driving around in search of the last bar open to grab the bread or hot pizza, where to drink the last glass and smoke the last cigarette before dawn was set. From the 80s and afterward, the night no longer from frightening those who stayed their homes (let's take a look at the anti-prohibitionism movement, jazz music and even the Cursed Poets who were all great night owls) and has since become the cradle where many personalities of society find the tranquility and security of the other nightclubs.Hopper's modern realist styleNowadays Hopper's painting reminds me of a variety of scenes from day life. It makes me feel proud and in any case compassionate, especially with the final three characters who engage in an exchange of words while the bartender cleans the bar to close the bar and begin a new. The nocturnes want to rest in the solitude of their nightly companions. They reflect on their lives by watching them through a glass and form a group of the night, accepting all and not judging anyone. It's not a coincidence that in the oldest civilisations, such as the Indian one that the hour and a half before dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta, or time of Brahma, the best moment to commit yourself to prayer, meditation as well as study and reflection. This is the time of day when the energy levels are higher, intense but of tranquil, spiritual intensity. There is no solitude nor emptiness in Hopper's painting; I saw more of it in the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters. This is because even the right-thinking people started going out at night. That's why even the oldest and most popular areas had to be turned into marketplaces for consumers as the spontaneous gatherings of people who gathered in the square were required to arrange their groups in line, waiting for their turn while the sound of the drums along the other side of the street was slowed by the police sirens. That scares me today, that the night is shattered by its mystical, timeless ambience and by the fact that it is an occasion of aggregation for lone wolves, and becoming an unintentional and productive element of the system that demands the highest level of professionalism and clarity even in the darkest parts in the city.
