The season of Halloween is upon us, and we write about plumbing. It can only mean one thing: time to tell plumbing horror stories.<img width="451" src="https://canduplumbing.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/candu-plumbing-rooter-van-min-1024x410.png">This is a little more personal. There are four plumbing problems you don't want to experience. Yes, these aren't something that happened 100 years ago; they're something that can happen today.Fatbergs, the legendary explorersIn fatberg, fat, oil, and grease (or FOG) are mixed together. Ashttps://app.box.com/s/h7uqebnou9xr47bif0vely2nd3oysejm, it becomes solid. The FOG in solid form adheres to the walls of the pipes or clogs them instead of moving through them. Apparently, the longer the FOG remains in the pipe, the more solidified and congealed it becomes.A fatberg can become almost as large as it wants. A fatberg spanning 100 feet was pulled last month out of their sewers. Why didn't engineers remove a 130 ton fatberg 820 feet long, removed from sewers beneath Whitechapel, London? Fatbergs are the main reason we advocate not pouring FOG down your drain.Toilet snakesDifferent types of plumbing snakesSnakes can squeeze through pipes and enter homes through toilets. Snakes can and do bite people sitting on toilets (warning: this link is disturbing). Know this, though, before you decide to destroy all the toilets in your house. Slithering snakes enter toilets by crawling up the sewer pipes. Normally, they don't enter sewer pipes, and if they do, they last for only a short time. There are many ways in which snakes enter sewer pipes. Through air vent pipes or by chasing their prey into storm drains or damaged pipes, they might end up in the water.SinkholesA sinkhole occurs when a natural depression in the ground has no external surface drainage. Soil water cannot drain away and redistribute properly if it does not have proper drainage. That water collects instead, dissolving the structures that support the ground. As the groundwater drains away, the cavernous spaces beneath the surface of the earth become empty. In the absence of support, the surface collapses, and anything on it sinks into the hole below. There are usually sinkholes in places where the soil is soluble and easily dissolved. However, sinkholes can also occur following accidents, weather disasters, or serious plumbing problems. Eventually, plumbing leaks will soften the ground and create sinkholes.A water heater explodedA conventional water heater heats and stores water inside a large tank made of metal. In this tank, a heating element heats up the water within. To prevent pressure buildup, water heaters generally have a few countermeasures. If these countermeasures fail or sediment interferes with the heater's correct performance, dangerously excessive pressure will build up. A regular maintenance schedule can prevent both of these scary scenarios.Though we hate to break our spooky spell, we feel obliged to share some good news. The good news is that every one of these terrifying troubles is entirely preventable. When you keep your plumbing in good condition, you will be able to withstand whatever your house may throw at you.Your plumbing demons are always in our sights.
