A few weeks ago, they requested for me to compose an essay on a painting by Hopper and one of the Nighthawks, and I, as an excellent researcher, went to learn more. It is well-known or at the least learned from experience, that to comprehend a painting one needs to know its history, the author and most importantly the setting in which he painted it. Art is definitely something universal, transcendent to the space and time, which makes it accessible even in the midst of centuries. The meanings alter, as does the way society and the world evolve, and what previously could be easily seen, maybe decades ago, is now evident. What was unthinkable before is now revealing the work to us in a completely different way.Re-defining a work over timeIt's a little like what I think happens when you view Hopper's " Nighthawks" which was closed by the bar, late at evening, and in the window that resembles the inside of a fish tank, in the same position as the characters he who were observed.I think that in this work, Hopper was trying to open up space to the viewer, inviting viewers to take in the quiet, detailed and calm scene that we are presented by the night. This space, conceived for an active audience may be the most important element that allows the work to be reinterpreted throughout time and, consequently, to be timeless, immortal and even contemporary. The piece, which was created in 1942, isn't immediately attributable to a precise time period however it appears that the date of its creation can change according to the changes in the viewers, based on the exact time at which the piece is seen.In my opinion this is what is essential to reading, the space dedicated to the reader Hopper was hoping to create.I'll explain.Researching information and news on Hopper's " Nighthawks" I was able be aware of how many people have described it , highlighting the following elements:"[...] the loneliness, the sense of being empty in a world whose shimmering patina begins to give way [...] The uniquely commercial element of the myths is that they peel off their masks and reveal the world as a blurred reality, with no reliable sources of reference Isolated by doubt and lack of conscience. "The night and the transformationI think this interpretation is a little ambiguous and, therefore, it's an interpretation influenced by the social context as well as by the date associated with the work of the United States between the 40s and 50s during the economic boom that was redefining the social and cultural assets in the lives of individuals in a society that was even a bit bourgeois, in which nightclubs are seen as places of isolation or despair. It's true in a certain degree, and slightly not.First time that I saw this painting, without having studied, it gave me a lot of peace and joy, thanks to its vibrant contrast and quiet nocturnal quality.Maybe, coming from a large busy and noisy city, night is one of the moments where I can enjoy the city with more peace: fewer people around more cars, less noise, more space between the streets to choose, and the best place to be, beneath the starless urban sky. The night has a very different meaning to me than the people who drank in bars across the United States during the 40s: when the sun goes down the city changes its appearance and the streets become more free and simple. We cannot ignore how society has transformed itself in more than half a century of cultural and social changes. This is the case in between Pop and Rock culture, between popular psychedelic scene as well as the decade 2000.As a girl of the 90s, have also grown up at night and by "growing up" I'm referring to every one of the "formative" experiences that the night provided me with. It is for me common to be out after dark, often walking through the neighborhood on Saturdays , looking for the most memorable party, dancing until the early hours while riding a motorbike, or car to locate the last bar open to grab the bread or hot pizza, where to drink the last glass and light the last cigarette before dawn came. Maybe from the 80s to the present, nightlife stopped frightening those who stayed at the house (let's take a look at the jazz movement, anti-prohibitionism and the notorious Cursed Poets all of them perfect nights owls) and has since become the cradle where many personalities of society find the peace and comfort of other nighthawks.Hopper's contemporary realismThe painting of Hopper today reminds me of a variety of scenes from day life. It makes me almost proud and in any case compassionate, especially with the last three characters, who exchange with the bartender as he clears the bar in order to conclude the bar and begin a new. The nocturnes want to rest in the silence of the nocturnal company, reflect on their lives by watching them through a glass and gather as a tribe of the night, welcoming everyone , and never judging anyone. It's not a coincidence that in the oldest ancestral civilizations such as the Indian one, the half hour before dawn is known as Brahmamuhurta or the time of Brahma, the best time to dedicate yourself to prayer, meditation as well as study and reflection. This is the time of day when the energies are more acute and intense, but they are of a calm, spiritual intensity.I don't see any solitude or absence in the painting of Hopper.https://www.openlearning.com/u/petersonsalomonsen-r1cbz6/blog/ApplyThese5SecretMethodsToImproveHopperSNighthawkssaw more of it in the streets that were gentrified in the night quarters, as even the right-thinking folks started drinking in the evening. That's why even the most popular and historic neighborhoods had to be transformed into marketplaces for consumers as well as the spontaneous aggregations of people who gathered in the square were required to arrange themselves in line, waiting for their turn; and the music of the drums on the the street was slowed by police sirens. This is what worries me today, that the night is desnatured by its mystical, timeless ambience, by its being an occasion of aggregation for lone wolves, and becoming an unintentional and productive element of the system, demanding clarity and respectability even in the most secluded corners in the city.
